The Nigerian Press Council (NPC) recently received an oversight visit from the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, National Orientation, Ethics & Values, Hon. Fatoba Olusola, alongside other committee members, at its headquarters in Abuja. The visit, aimed at assessing the Council’s operations and regulatory functions, provided an opportunity for constructive dialogue on the evolving challenges facing the Nigerian media industry.

Welcoming the delegation, the Executive Secretary of the NPC, Dr. Dili Ezughah, expressed appreciation for the committee’s visit and ongoing support. He highlighted the Council’s efforts in upholding press freedom, ensuring ethical journalism, and addressing issues of misinformation and disinformation in the media space. However, Dr. Ezughah used the platform to advocate for a broader scope of operations and enhanced resources to enable the NPC to effectively regulate and respond to contemporary challenges in the online media and press landscape.
He noted that while traditional print media remains crucial, the rise of digital platforms has significantly altered the media environment, bringing issues such as fake news, cyber harassment, unethical reporting, and content monetization concerns to the forefront. To address these, he emphasized the need for policy reforms, increased funding, and technological upgrades that would enable the NPC to extend its oversight to digital journalism and online publications effectively.
Hon. Fatoba Olusola commended the NPC for its dedication to media regulation and professional standards. He assured the Council of the House Committee’s willingness to review and support legislative measures aimed at strengthening the agency’s capacity in line with global best practices.

The visit concluded with discussions on enhancing collaboration between lawmakers, media stakeholders, and regulatory bodies to foster a more responsible, free, and ethical press in Nigeria.
